ColinC's JournalMy farewell to DU
Folks,
I am leaving DU. I appreciate the valuable distractions this place has provided me, but I have decided I am breaking up with all forms of social media as I enter the next decisions of my life.
These next few years are going to be brutal. And I encourage everybody to remain vigliant in the face of adversity -and let's face it: pure stupidity.
But alas the words by Aeschylus as remembered by RFK on the night we lost MLK persist:
"Even in our sleep -pain which does not forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart.
Until, through our despair, against our will, comes wisdom
By the awful grace of God."
I hope that you can use your strength and wisdom in these hard times to deliver -in whatever way you can, for yourselves and each other, the change this world needs.
With Love, In Strength And In Solidarity,
-Colin
Who else going to watch their spending more during the next four years?
Tightening the belt, spending as much as is reasonable only on essentials, not eating out, no major non-essential purchases, trips or cruises. Just save, save, save for four years like the banks and corporations who want to force this authoritarian clownshow on us have always said we should.
Not only is it a valid and potentially effective form of protest (much like a general strike), but for a lot of folks it is probably a very responsible personal financial decision.
Obviously it will be tested how viable such a motive can be, but any ideas should be considered for the next four years of the absolute bullshit we are about to endure.
NC State Supreme Court Blocks State From Certifying Democrat as Winner in Top Court Case
Source: The Hill
The North Carolina Supreme Court voted to block the certification of Democratic Justice Allison Riggs as the winner of her state Supreme Court race while her GOP opponent challenges the legitimacy of certain ballots.
The 5-1 ruling from the court on Tuesday places a temporary stay on the state elections board from declaring Riggs the winner over Republican Jefferson Griffin, a judge on the state Court of Appeals. The five-justice Republican majority voted to grant the stay, while Democratic Justice Anita Earls dissented. Riggs had recused herself from the case.

Say your goodbyes to democracy cause this is about as blatant as a steal you can get.
Congress can not count Trump's votes tomorrow, and Harris would become president.
This article by two Supreme Court clerks was written a couple weeks ago in The Hill. Congress does have the power to stop Trump from becoming president if they fulfilled their constitutional duty to prevent an insurrectionist from holding office.

The plain wording from the 14th amendment:
https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-14/
Congress can and should block Trump from becoming president, since the constitution is clear about the fact he is unqualified to hold office. If we are going to be purists and honor the electoral college despite a candidate losing the popular vote because the constitution is clear about the rules, we can and should keep a winning candidate from holding office, again, because the constitution is clear about the rules: an insurrectionist is unqualified to receive electoral college votes and congress must not count those votes he is ineligible to receive. The alternative would be for congress to allow an insurrectionist to hold office with a 2/3rds vote. There is no other constitutional way about it.
2026 Wildly unlikely hypo: Could Angus King run against Susan Collins for her seat as a way of getting rid of her?
If he loses, he's still a senator, but if he wins she gets replaced by a Democrat and King's replacement is chosen by a Democratic governor. She can still run for that seat but for the first time in decades it won't be as an incumbent. 🤔
I'm thinking similarly about Tammy Baldwin against Ron Johnson in WI in 2028...
Would the GOP expand SCOTUS?
I saw a few weeks ago that a GOP congressman was looking to revive a formerly attempted Democratic bill that would expand the courts. Considering the current SCOTUS has signalled being less than lukewarm about Trump's proposals, how likely is it that the GOP and Trump will expand the court so they can get more friendly justices? Thinking a Justice Rick Scott, Ted Cruz, Lauren Boebert?
Adam Gray (D-CA13) extends his lead to 234 votes
