Do Americans Remember the Actual Trump Presidency?

(NY Mag) No matter what you think of Donald Trump, there is zero doubt that two events during his presidency will forever leap off the pages of history books and dwarf anything else that happened: the outbreak of a pandemic that killed over a million Americans and a mob attack on the U.S. Capitol aimed at preventing Joe Biden’s confirmation as president-elect. But when the New York Times/Siena polling outfit asked voters “to describe the one thing they remembered most from Donald J. Trump’s presidency, only 5 percent of respondents referred to Jan. 6, and only 4 percent to COVID.” 39 percent cited “Trump’s behavior” as most memorable, and another 24 percent named “the economy.”

Biden signs sweeping aviation safety, reform bill into law

(NBC News) President Joe Biden on Thursday signed sweeping aviation legislation that will boost U.S. air traffic controller staffing, increase funding to avert runway close-call incidents and speed up refunds for canceled flights. The $105 billion, five-year measure reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration. It prohibits airlines from charging fees for families to sit together, requires airplanes to be equipped with 25-hour cockpit recording devices, raises maximum civil penalties for airline consumer violations from $25,000 per violation to $75,000 and boosts aircraft production scrutiny.

No wonder Republicans are afraid of a debate -- Donald Trump is barely holding it together at trial

(Salon) Donald Trump has tried to taunt President Joe Biden by claiming he's ready for a presidential debate "anytime, anywhere." The gambit left him little choice but to immediately accept when the Biden campaign offered debate dates in June and September, and terms like not having an audience and allowing real journalists to moderate. But within mere hours it became clear that Trump and the rest of the GOP already regretted the decision.

All Republicans MUST attend Trump's criminal trial and yell at media. These are the rules.

(USA Today) Just a quick reminder that every Republican lawmaker in the House and Senate is required to make at least one day trip to the Manhattan criminal courthouse while our hero and presumptive presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, is being persecuted for doing nothing wrong whatsoever. Because President Trump is under a (VERY UNFAIR) gag order and we have no understanding whatsoever of how the criminal justice system works, it is incumbent on us to be the former president’s loud and aggrieved voice. That requires several GOP representatives and senators to accompany President Trump into the courtroom each day for a few minutes before standing outside the courthouse and yelling into TV cameras about how mean everyone is being.

A 'Stop The Steal' Symbol Was Displayed At Alito's House In 2021

(Huff Post) A symbol affiliated with former President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” fallacy was on display at Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s house in 2021, a New York Times investigation found Thursday. The symbol in question was an upside-down American flag, which supporters of Trump’s stolen election conspiracy theory began displaying after he lost to President Joe Biden in 2020. Neighbors who saw and photographed the flag confirmed to the Times that it flew on Jan. 17, 2021. The conservative justice admitted it but said it was his wife’s doing.

Democrats want more answers from Justice Clarence Thomas about $267,000 loan for RV

(USA Today) Democratic senators want more answers from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas about a $267,000 loan he received in 1999 to purchase a high-end motorhome. Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island wrote in a letter to Thomas’ attorney Wednesday that the justice has evaded answering whether he’s repaid any of the loan. That leaves open the possibility, the senators said, that Thomas failed to report to the IRS - and pay taxes on - any part of the loan that was forgiven.

Gallego Gets Boost from Ex-McCain, Sinema Donors

(Political Wire) Rep. Ruben Gallego’s (D-AZ) U.S. Senate bid in Arizona “is getting a boost from a group of donors who previously backed Republicans like the late Sen. John McCain and the independent incumbent he hopes to replace, Kyrsten Sinema,” Politico reports.

How Biden deprived Trump of a key debating asset

(Alternet) President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to two presidential debates — one hosted by CNN in Atlanta on June 27, the second hosted by ABC News on September 10. One of Biden's conditions for the two debates is that there will be no live audience — just the candidates and the moderators.

The Supreme Court decides not to trigger a second Great Depression

(Vox) The Supreme Court delivered a firm and unambiguous rebuke to some of America’s most reckless judges on Thursday, ruling those judges were wrong to declare an entire federal agency unconstitutional in a decision that threatened to trigger a second Great Depression.
